President Mwai Kibaki died on April 21, 2022 in Nairobi aged 90 years. The death of the former President was announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta. On April 25, his body was taken to Parliament where he laid in state He was honoured with a State Funeral where Kenyans and leaders from across Africa paid their last respects with the man referred to as the gentleman of Kenyan politics. The funeral, which was designated a national holiday, was held at the Nyayo National Stadium on April 29, 2022. He was buried on April 30, 2022, at his home in Othaya in Nyeri County.
